PLACES NOT TO BE MISSED

IN ÓBIDOS YOU MUST VISIT…

ÓBIDOS CASTLE

The ideal place for children to dream of their d’Artacan!
Of Roman origin, it was fortified under the Arab domain. It was conquered by Christians in 1148.

Let the kids dress up as a king, queen, knight or musketeer for a while. Several stores on Rua Direita offer this possibility at low prices.

VILLA’S DOOR

It is the main entrance to Óbidos Village.

A double gate with an interior covered in tiles from the 18th century, leading directly to Rua Direita, the main road of this village, where anything can happen…

THE “RUA DIREITA”

Let yourself stroll along the “Rua Direita”. The traditional houses draw attention to their decorative details, handicraft shops arouse interest and curiosity, cozy cafes invite you to drink the famous drink “Ginja de Óbidos” even more delicious when drunk in a chocolate cup.

The restaurants with their sunny terraces draw us in for a meal that seems to have even more flavor just because we are here, surrounded by so much history.

AQUEDUCT

Queen D. Catarina of Austria, wife of D. João III, realizing the importance of the Aqueduct for this town, had it built as a way of bringing water to the village. It is a sober construction 3 km long, allowing the arrival of water to the fountains of Óbidos to refresh not only its population, but also its visitors.

MUSEUMS

There are several museums in Óbidos – why not come and discover them?

The Parish Museum at the Church of São João Baptista;
The Municipal Museum of Óbidos where you can discover the religious work of Josefa d’Óbidos;
The Abílio de Mattos e Silva Museum dedicated to Theater and Opera.

CHURCHES

“Igreja Matriz De Santa Maria” is the main and most beautiful church in the village. It stands on the foundations of a Visigothic temple that was later converted into a mosque. The current building is from the 16th century and was built on the initiative of Queen D. Leonor, wife of King D. João II.

The “Igreja da Misericórdia” and the “Igreja de São Pedro” seem to compete for our attention. One of the admirable traits of these religious temples are their richly decorated altars and the tiles that cover them.
